A flora colossus from Planet X, the alien known as Groot exhibits enhanced vitality and the ability to manipulate all forms of vegetation. As sturdy as a towering tree, Groot forges his own way, serving as the team's silent but reliable pathfinder.

Groot is a Vanguard hero in Marvel Rivals, and is the 11th hero introduced to the game's roster.
He currently has two team-up abilities:
Overview
Strengths
- Mid-range bruiser with powerful area-of-denial abilities, capable of creating obstacles to protect his allies or block enemy fire.
- Has slightly higher health compared to other Vanguards.
- His primary fire, Vine Strike, extends Groot's arms to deal damage from a long range. Despite its appearance, it counts as a projectile.
- His secondary fire, Spore Bomb, launches a projectile which splits itself into six smaller shards upon impact. Can deal very high damage if both the main projectile and its splinters hit the target.
- His melee attack, Furious Flora, is distinct for dealing knockback every two hits. It can be weaved with his Vine Strike for higher damage-per-second.
- Groot is able to build wooden walls that can block enemy view; players can change the direction the walls are built to even serve as platforms. These interact directly with his passive, Flora Colossus, which grants Groot the ability to "awaken" the wooden walls if he's nearby them, which provides extra effects.
- Ironwood Walls have higher health (700) and are longer in width. When awakened they provide Groot with 40 bonus health-per-second (up to 250). Groot can only have one active at a time.
- Thornlash Walls have much lower health (250) and are shorter in width. When awakened they deal damage to enemies nearby that are attacked by Groot and his team. Groot can have up to three active at a time, and can build them continuously by holding the button.
- Throwing Spore Bomb directly at the wall if there is an enemy near it will cause the wall to lash out multiple times, both to the bomb as well to the split spores that spawn from it.
- Both walls can deny plenty of attacks and even Ultimates. In particular, it can block Jeff the Land Shark's It's Jeff! if the wall is placed in front of him before he tries to devour the team, as it'll block his line of sight.
- Placing any of Groot's walls over certain hero-spawned obstacles will instantly destroy them, such as Peni Parker's Arachno Mines, Moon Knight's Ancient Ankhs, and Namor's Aquatic Dominions.
- His Ultimate, Strangling Prison, launches vines that pull enemies in and imprison them for a few seconds while dealing damage-over-time. Enemies affected by this ability cannot move but are still able to attack and use non-mobility abilities.
- If Groot throws the Ultimate at one of his walls, enemies will be pulled and pinned onto it.
Weaknesses
- Requires proper skill to play effectively as the wooden walls can be detrimental to his own team since they can block his allies' own abilities.
- Not very effective in moving objectives since he is forced to constantly reposition his wooden walls and burn his cooldowns.
- Moving objectives will instantly destroy his walls if they are placed in front of them.
- Is vulnerable if both his wooden walls are on cooldown and destroyed.
- No mobility tools, combined with his rather slow speed and tall and large frame make him easy to hit.
- Lower attack range compared to other ranged heroes.

Strategy
- Groot has a main ability that is unique to his character, which is being able to place walls. By placing Groots Ironwood Walls or Thornlash Walls, Groot can effectively seperate the frontline of the enemy team from the backline. By doing this, Groot's walls block incoming healing, allowing your team to swiftly eliminate the seperated tanks.
- Groots Thornlash Walls have a much greater range than the Ironwood Wall. Groot can use this to his advantage by blocking (remaining) enemies from retreating. Groot can also do this with his Ironwood wall at much closer ranges with a bigger area.
- While playing Groot, remember that his Thornlash walls actually do damage. By placing walls behind your enemies, you can strategically eliminate them quickly with their clicks if they ever get in range with your walls.
- Groot is one of the strongest heroes while playing in tight corners, gaps, or areas. By playing in these areas, Groots walls can (almost) completely block all pathways from retreating to the enemy team. These can be areas such as the entryway to Klyntar, when the payload turns on Spider Islands, above entryways on Mission Areas, and most effectively when the maps walls arise on Steller Spaceports Mission Area.
- Groot is a perfect counter against Peni's spidernests. By placing your walls, Thornlash or Ironwood, Groot can cancel/destroy Peni's nests immediately.
- Groot has an extremely powerful ultimate. After shooting his vine cluster, any nearby enemies are trapped into 1 point, unable to move. When paired with any high-burst damage, it can (almost) effectively eliminate the trapped enemies. This can be Namor's ultimate, Moon Knights ultimate, Iron Man's ultimate, or even Squirrel Girl's main attack.
- It's recommended to place walls before or after you use your ultimate. Remember, Groot's walls deal valuable damage, allowing you to get high amounts of burst damage in your ultimate.

|
Groot possesses a delicate, childish innocence combined with a deep, instinctive insight. Despite his vocabulary of "I am Groot," he has an array of emotions, including tremendous curiosity, delight, grief, and affection. Groot is naturally gentle and empathic, creating small but profound ties with his friends around him, particularly with his partner in crime Rocket. He does not seek attention or leadership; rather, he observes, listens, and reacts with genuine emotional honesty. He is widely known for being a flora colossus of a few words, said words being I am Groot, with only a select few of people who understand him like his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy, even more so with telepathic heroes such as Emma Frost or Phoenix. But while a few words short he makes up for in a heart bigger than himself and a reliable nature as firm as his bark. While his mouth is only capable of a few words he understands more than others may realize as Emma and Jean demonstrate. As an alien plant hero, Groot also holds a love for nature whether it be flora or fauna, Groot had kindness for all, including the plants of Klyntar, a harsh and dangerous planet. Despite his gentle nature however, Groot is also shown to violent and aggressive should the situation arise, especially if you hurt those he cares about.
Overall, Groot's personality grows alongside his physical growth, reflecting various stages of emotional development. His primary beliefs stay constant: he is caring, protective, and believes in the concept of chosen family. Groot exemplifies the concept that strength does not always require loud words; it can grow silently, like a tree, and remain steady when it matters the most. Groot is a compassionate, devoted, and altruistic kind giant whose strength stems from empathy rather than words. Despite his limited speech, he is emotionally expressive, places a high importance on friendship and family, and always prioritizes others.

Trivia
- Groot's first appearance as a hero was in "Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord" (2007) #1 in July 2007, though the character's name and original design date back to the monster featured in "Tales to Astonish" (1959) #13 in November 1960.
- The original Groot was later retroactively established as a different member of the Flora Colossus species, officially designated as "Groot XXCVII".
- "I am Groot" is all Groot can say out loud. But he only interacts in normal conversations in voicelines with telepaths such as Emma Frost and Jean Grey.
- When he interacts with Emma Frost, she can hear his voice communicating normally through telepathy. Frost notes that he is very polite.[1]
